I thought we were done with the bullshit. After seeing my best friend get killed in front of me, I changed my ways. I’d calmed down and became a family man working a nine-to-five trying to change my life. Now, as I weaved through traffic trying to reach my brother-in-law, all I could think was that I should have known better. There was no such thing as normal with the Burnett family, and the call I’d gotten from Courtney had solidified that. “This storm will pass” type of talking didn’t work. We lived in a constant fucking hurricane that was always at a category five with no signs of stopping.

The last few days I wasn’t hadn’t been able to rest. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but for sure a storm was coming. When the phone rang this morning, I wasn’t too surprised that Courtney was into something, but my thoughts were confined to church shit, like some gangs from the hood fucking with the church ladies, or something from our past trying to pull him back.

It was like the family was cursed, and even though I was married into the Burnett bullshit, I still felt connected. Terry and I used to run the streets as kids, which had started my bond with the family I would spend my life with. I couldn’t pick up and leave when shit got hot, especially now that I was married and had a child with a Burnett. I was part of the family.

Despite Momma Burnett passing and Terry being killed, somehow we carried on, trying to put the past behind us. Somehow, with every day that passed, we cried less about Terry and moved on like he would have wanted, yet here we were. I didn’t know the particulars yet, but it sounded like some straight bullshit. If it was simple, I wouldn't have gotten a phone call.

Now that Terry was gone, I was playing the big brother, stepping in to protect the family like Terry once did.

"I'm doing your work, big bruh," I said to him as if he was in the passenger seat next to me. When he died, it became my job to keep the family together and everyone out of harm’s way, but there had to come a time when being normal became effortless instead of a damn fight.

Racing down the highway with the gas pedal to the floor, I tried to figure out what the emergency with Courtney could be. What was so bad that he had to call me with something he couldn't discuss over the phone?

I replayed the conversation in my mind. I had been dropping Junior off at school when I got the call about some shit going down. Courtney hadn’t cursed in front of me since he became a pastor, but talking to him this morning was like speaking to the old him. I could feel it. Some shit was wrong... really wrong.

I decided not to tell my wife, Tiffany, where I was going.
